There were various changes to memory related DMVs, DBCC memory status, and Perfmon counters in SQL Server 2012 as part of the redesign of the Memory Manager component of SQLOS. The Memory Manager redesign resulted in being able to more accurately size and govern all SQL Server memory consumption, making page allocations more efficient, and ...

Last week when RC0 was released, the updated installer for ''Juneau'' (SQL Server Data Tools) was not available. Depending on how you tried to get it, you either ended up on a blank search page, or a page offering the CTP3 bits. Important note: the CTP3 Juneau bits are not compatible with SQL Server 2012 RC0.
If you already have Visual Studio ...

At the PASS Summit, one of the most anticipated announcements was the release date, and marketing label, for SQL Server code-named ''Denali'' - the release date is ''first half of 2012'' (which probably means somewhere around June 25th), and the official name is SQL Server 2012. The logo was revealed on stage, and in a previous blog post, I ...

One of the biggest complaints I see developers raising about SSIS since it was released in 2005 is that the only way to debug Script Components is the distinctly simplistic and old fashioned method of sticking up message boxes - there is no way to step through the code as it executes (something that Microsoft developers have ...

At that time SSIS Reporting Pack was a precursor to what I really ...

In my blog post SSIS Server, Catalogs, Environments & Environment Variables in SSIS in Denali from November 2010 I alluded to forthcoming enhancements in the logging infrastructure when I said: One final note on logging. The fairly limited information that gets captured in the current CTP is not the same as what will be in the product upon ...

Reigniting the [SCDEndDate] debate In November 2009 I wrote a blog post entitled Debunking Kimball Effective Dates where I stated that I was against the Kimball-recommended practice of maintaining a StartDate & EndDate value for every record in a type 2 slowly changing dimension (SCD) table (i.e. the values highlighted in blue in the ...

The third Community Technology Preview (CTP3) of SQL Server code-named Denali is upon us and, although you would never guess from the official announcement, there is a whole raft of enhancements to SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and in this blog post I will take you on a tour of some of them. I must stress that nothing here is finalised ...
