To get a good experience out of twitter you have to follow X number of people. X is relative. My ADD requires me to follow 1300+ but it could be 20 or 2000 for you. I have an incomplete list of SQL tweeps that is a good starting point here: http://statisticsio.com/Home/tabid/36/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/217/Cool-SQL-People-that-I-Follow-on-Twitter.aspx

NNTP is cool and all but progress is good.
